What makes a US resume different

The American resume is a marketing document, not a career history. It is deliberately short, results-driven and stripped of anything that could introduce bias — no photo, no age, no nationality, no marital status. Recruiters skim it in 6 to 8 seconds, so the top third has to sell you instantly.

A US resume is sometimes called a resume, while a CV (curriculum vitae) in the US usually means a long academic document. If a job posting says "resume", they want one to two pages.

The five sections recruiters expect

Section What goes in it Typical length
Contact Name, city + state, phone, email, LinkedIn 1 line
Professional summary 2–4 sentences positioning you for the target role 2–4 lines
Skills Tools, technologies and hard skills relevant to the job 6–12 items
Experience Reverse-chronological roles with quantified achievements 3–5 bullets each
Education Degree, institution, graduation year (no GPA after ~3 years) 1–3 lines

Add optional sections only when they help: certifications, projects (especially for developers), volunteering and awards. Do not include references — they are requested later.

Formatting rules that keep you safe

  • One page until you have a decade of experience.
  • US Letter size, 0.5–1 inch margins, 10–12 pt font (Calibri, Arial, Helvetica or similar).
  • Reverse chronological order — most recent role first.
  • No photo, no date of birth, no marital status, no nationality, no full street address. City and state are enough.
  • No paragraphs of prose — bullets only in the experience section.
  • Consistent dates: Mar 2021 – Present, right-aligned or aligned in a column.

Quantify every achievement

The single biggest upgrade to any US resume is turning duties into numbers. Compare:

  • Before: "Responsible for managing the social media accounts."

  • After: "Grew Instagram from 4k to 52k followers in 9 months, driving a 23% lift in referral traffic."

  • Before: "Worked on the checkout page."

  • After: "Rebuilt the checkout flow in React, cutting page load from 4.1s to 1.2s and lifting conversion by 11%."

Use this formula: Action verb + what you did + measurable result. If you lack hard numbers, estimate defensibly (percentages, volumes, frequency, team size, budget).

Optimising for applicant tracking systems

Most large US employers screen with an ATS before a human ever looks. To pass:

  • Use standard headings (Experience, Education, Skills) so the parser maps your data correctly.
  • Mirror the job posting's exact keywords — "project management", not "PM", if that is what they wrote.
  • Avoid tables, text boxes, columns, headers/footers and images that scramble parsing.
  • Spell out acronyms once: Search Engine Optimization (SEO).
  • Send a text-based PDF, not a scan.

Our US Resume builder already applies these rules automatically.

Five mistakes that cost interviews

  1. An objective statement ("Seeking a challenging role…") — replaced it with a targeted summary.
  2. Responsibilities instead of achievements.
  3. A wall of skills with no evidence.
  4. Typos and inconsistent tense (past roles in past tense, current role in present).
  5. One generic resume for every application — tailor the summary and skills to each posting.

US Resume Format: The Complete 2026 Guide — FAQ

One page for most candidates with under 10 years of experience. Two pages are acceptable for senior, executive or highly technical profiles, but every line must earn its place.

No. US employers avoid photos to prevent discrimination claims. Never include a photo, and remove date of birth, marital status, nationality and full address.

Submit a PDF unless the posting asks for Word. A text-based PDF keeps your formatting and remains readable by applicant tracking systems.
